PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF DRIVERS' CONGESTION CONSCIOUSNESS ON A FREEWAY FOR PROVIDING USEFUL TRAFFIC INFORMATION

Information on freeway congestion is advantageous to drivers because it can decrease drivers' irritation and give them the valuable information to select the best route for themselves on a highway or freeway. On the other hand, it is also criticized that the current definition used by freeway information has discrepancy to drivers' consciousness of congestion. The discrepancy between them was studied previously. A definition of freeway congestion was proposed on the basis of drivers' consciousness. The definition, however, was defined by using data only from an intercity freeway. Since it is thought that congestion consciousness differs by type of freeway, congestion consciousness must be analyzed by using data on the other types of freeways. This paper analyzes drivers' congestion consciousness by using data on other freeway types. A comparison is made of congestion consciousness and an analysis is conducted of the definition of congestion to provide the congestion information that is easy to understand by more drivers.
