ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION NEEDS FOR COMMUNITY-LEVEL TRAVELERS

Most arguments regarding traveler information systems seem to aim at smoothness of arterial links. On the other hand, local congestion problems on community streets have also become serious recently in Japan. This paper deals with the needs of an information system for mitigating such problems. To the case study of local congestion problems, the authors gave attention to the shopping area neighboring a major railway station, where vehicles approaching the department stores and vehicles accessing the railway station, including buses and taxis, are intricate to the serious congestion. Through some surveys, the serious congestion problem was made clear. To investigate the needs and possibility of using an information system to mitigate such problems, the authors made a questionnaire survey of shopping trips on 752 households in the Ohmiya area. Through the survey, it was found that: 1) citizens are dissatisfied by the shortage of information about community-level traffic; 2) they want the information system to be accessible from home, thereby having information on congestion in shopping areas before getting in their cars, allowing them to choose the time of departure as well as the transportation mode; 3) they need quite precise information through which they would know the time they would spend in the parking queue in real time.
