EVALUATION OF DRIVING SKILL FROM ESTIMATED CURVATURE OF DRIVING LOCI

Strategies of the advanced safe driving of vehicles have depended on the development of the safe driving systems like air bag systems and laser radar fron monitoring systems. But these are not enough. The final strategy takes the skill of drivers into account, and the system which objectively recognizes rough and disturbed driving is required to make drivers conscious of safe driving. This paper is aimed at describing a method to evaluate driving skill and methods of how to announce the driving situation to the driver. A new system is presented to measure the curvature of driving loci against distance by using speed and rate gyro sensors, and a method is presented to extract the curvature due to driving from that of the road itself. The extracted curvature itself includes the information of drivers' skill. For example, unskillful drivers yield the oscillation of the curvature when driving a circular road or after making a turn and so on. The driver's skill can be evaluated from the oscillation of curvature based on driver yield.
