PROGRESS OF TRAFFIC REGULATION DIGITAL DATABASE IN JAPAN

Regarding in-vehicle traffic information supply systems with graphic display in Japan, the main current is of a navigation type showing driving routes. The number of car mounting static navigation units has already reached over 600,000. Keeping pace with progress in advanced traffic information systems (ATIS) and vehicle information and communication systems (VICS) activities, more expectations are held for proceeding to the dynamic navigation era based on real-time traffic information. To make this sophisticated system successful, digitized traffic regulations data are indispensable. Since each Prefectural Public Safety Commission, which supervises the Prefectural Police Headquarters is legally responsible for management of traffic regulations in that region, it ought to be appropriate that the National Police Agency plans to develop the complete traffic regulations digital database for which Japan Traffic Management Technology Association was nominated as the administrative organization in 1993. The first edition of the digital database has already been completed and delivered to all members of the buriness promotion department set up in the Japan Traffic Management Technology Association. Each member company is planning to develop their own commercial products by utilizing this database to attract prospective cutomers in the market. The commercial products are expected to appear in the market in the summer of 1995 or earlier. This paper provides the background on the emergence of this database need, the process of manufacture, the database structure, arrangement of the maintenance, etc., and refers to state of the expected products manufactured by the concerned member companies.
