CIRCULARLY POLARIZED MICROSTRIP ANTENNA HAVING SECTOR BEAM FOR THE AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM

Soon, an automatic vehicle identification system will be used all over Japan. The purpose of the system is to serve drivers for higher availability, such as nonstop running and cashless payment. An antenna of the system at multilane roads has to be suppressed to prevent interference from other lanes. A circularly polarized microstrip antenna with a sector beam and low sidelobe characteristics can be suppressed to avoid interference of the automatic vehicle identification system. This antenna is a new type of sector beam planar array with wideband characteristics using paired-element arrangements. The paired-element array consists of two circular polarization antenna elements that are arranged at a right angle in the space and phase difference by 90 deg to achieve the wider frequency band. Some sector beam planar array antennas were fabricated and tested at 2.45 GHz. As a result of experiments, satisfactory performance was obtained in both impedance characteristics and radiation pattern.
