GSM BASED TRAVELLER INFORMATION SERVICES OFFERED WITH PORTABLE AND IN-CAR TERMINALS

Global system for mobile communications (GSM) is a digital cellular system that was developed in Europe and is widely accepted outside of Europe. GSM is a dual-mode system with both voice and data services. GSM data services include packet-switched and circuit-switched options. The maximum speed in the circuit-switched GSM data service is 9600 bauds. GSM packet data services include short message services (SMS) and general packet radio service (GPRS). GSM SMS is suitable for applications requiring low capacity and non-time critical performance. GPRS offers a high capacity data link for applications requiring more extensive data transfer capabilities. The value of different traveller information services to the travelling user was studied within the framework of European Program DRIVE II. Partly based on the results gained from this work and partly based on local constraints and interests, Nokia Research Center built a comprehensive set of traveller information services to be offered with its terminals. Nokia Research Center is actively developing terminals for traveller information services. The suite of terminals include both portable and in-car terminals. GSM SMS has played an important role in the case of both terminal types starting already from the first prototypes. With the increasing amount of data to be transferred, the need for the higher speed GSM data services has grown. The traveller information terminals now under development will make use of higher speed GSM data services, either exclusively or complemented with GSM SMS.
