Since 1993, a teletoll system with read/write technology has been under operation on 20 lanes at 5 toll collection barriers. This system is used by 7,000 motorists every day. In 1995, AREA will expand this technology to cover the entire network. This paper reports on the following apsects of the project: 1) reasons for implementation and extension of the teletoll system; 2) description of the consumer product and consumer experience; 3) different project steps from preliminary design to daily use; 4) first results in operational phase; and 5) AREA's project cost.
