SMART CARD APPLICATIONS IN ITS

Smart cards are used widely in various applications including transportation, finance, communication, and in-company systems. In the transportation field, using smart cards as fare cards in public transport facilities is one example and they are receiving attention for their advantages and are being used or considered in many applications. The most interesting example of a smart card application is electronic toll collection (ETC), which are being implemented rapidly worldwide. In Japan, investigation of ETC has begun. ETC has two main purposes--to reduce traffic congestion and make toll collection more efficient. In an ETC system, the toll is collected automatically via communication with a vehicle equipped with a tag, also known as in-vehicle equipment. Three main types of in-vehicle equipment have been developed and are categorized by their features. Type 1 is a one piece read-only unit, while Type 2 is both read/write. The most advanced equipment is Type 3--a two piece read/write tag with a smart card. In early ETC systems, the "read only" or "read/write" types of in-vehicle equipment were used. However, Type 3 equipment is becoming more popular because of its many advantages. Japan is testing, among others, smart card based in-vehicle equipment. Because of their convenience, versatility, and privacy, smart cards will likely be found in all future ETC systems.
