PEDESTRIAN WAITING TIME INDICATOR WITH VOICE GUIDANCE
Conducting the program "Traffic Courtesy Japan" for realizing ruled traffic and preventing traffic accidents, Fukui Prefectural Headquarters introduced a pedestrian waiting time indicator with voice guidance to encourage responsible pedestrian action. The indicator aims to prevent pedestrians from accidents in a signalized intersection on the following occasions: 1) crossing at signal phase change, 2) crossing just after signal phase turn to red, and 3) crossing without crosswalk. Also, it is intended to encourage better pedestrian behavior by keeping them engaged while waiting during red phase. The pedestrian waiting time indicator shows waiting time via an electrical illuminated sign and gives pedestrians voice guidance in accordance with waiting time. It is especially valuable at crowded intersections where pedestrians must wait long during the red phase. The contents of voice guidance are as follows: 1) The signal is now green. Look right and left before crossing. 2) The signal is changing. Do not enter the crosswalk. 3) The signal is red. Do not cross the street.
