Bridge inspection is being perfected by the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) via the Integrated Bridge Inspection Information System (IBIIS). This multimedia system allows bridge engineers to collect, store, retrieve, and distribute bridge inspection records, including full-motion videos with audio. All records are available at the touch of a button and can be viewed on a computer screen simultaneously by multiple users logged on at various IBIIS locations. MHD has seen improvements in bridge safety and worker productivity as a result of IBIIS implementation. This article describes development of IBIIS and the complexity of implementing such a complicated system. A six-phase implementation process is under way with a training interval following each phase and overlapping with the next implementation phase. A sidebar highlights a bridge management system developed by the Ohio Department of Transportation, which includes a computerized database.
