Global positioning systems (GPS) have many applications in road and bridge construction--some proven and some experimental. For instance, experiments are being conducted for remote control of construction equipment--such as dozers, graders, and dump trucks--using GPS technology. This article provides a brief explanation of GPS, how it works, and its applications in the highway construction industry. The use of GPS in construction has many benefits, including reduced construction costs, improved crew safety, and increased quality of work. A sidebar discussing differential GPS is included.
