ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF STEEL OUTSTANDS IN COMPRESSION

A rational design formula for predicting the ultimate strength of steel outstands in compression is developed. The authors of this study conducted an extensive elastoplastic large displacement finite-element method (FEM) analysis. The outstand is assumed to have initial out-of-flatness and residual stresses. From numerical results, a formula is derived as a function of both magnitude of initial out-of-flatness and residual stress. Then, the formula is used to predict the ultimate compressive strength of members with H-sections, and comparisons are made of the predicted ultimate strengths obtained by the effective width method and those of numerical study and tests. Using the proposed formula, the ultimate strengths of compression members that have steel outstands can be predicted.
