AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF 3M "ROAD SAFETY" PRODUCTS

Road safety is a major concern within highway and traffic engineering. The average cost of a road accident in Great Britain currently stands at over 40,000 British pounds, with fatal accidents costing over 800,000 British pounds. In 1992, the total cost of road accidents in Great Britain was about 10 billion British pounds. TMS Consultancy carried out three independent reviews of 3M products which could potentially make a contribution to the reduction and prevention of road accidents. In 1993, TMS undertook two reviews of road sign sites, looking at the effectiveness of 3M's Diamond Grade sheeting material and their new Fluorescent Diamond Grade sign face material. In 1994, TMS conducted a trial of another 3M product, the Light Guidance Tube. This paper describes the results of these studies.
