PREDICTING DREDGE MATERIAL DISPERSION IN OPEN WATER DUMPING AS A FUNCTION OF THE MATERIAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

This paper describes the results of a series of physical modeling tests that were used to establish the dispersion characteristics of dredged material from San Francisco Bay. It was demonstrated that physical modeling can produce results useable for inputs to environmental impact statements, the selection of disposal sites, and to estimate the short-term behavior of the material. Moisture content of the dumped material was found to be the most important parameter in describing its short-term behavior.
