IMPLEMENTATION OF STATE ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMS TAKING POLICE SURVEILLANCE AS AN EXAMPLE

In view of the alarming accident trend since Germany's unification, the governments of Germany's new federal states have begun to develop road safety programs. The road safety programs contain objectives and spheres of action to improve road safety in the years ahead. The programs are to be developed further taking the results relevant to safety into account. To this end, the State of Brandenburg and the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) have agreed on the scientific back-up of the implementation of the road safety program of the State of Brandenburg. A BASt working group has prepared a study program to scientifically examine the progress of this implementation. Apart from the periodic examination of safety aspects and selected evaluations, the study program provides for the documentation of the state measures initiated. Taking police surveillance measures as an example, the questionnaire survey which makes it possible to describe the measures and activities of the authorities involved in this sector is presented.
