HOW VDOT'S CULPEPER DISTRICT CLEARS SNOW, ICE

the Virginia Department of Transportation's Culpeper District uses a region-wide snow and ice control program. The move provides increased flexibility for the nine-county, 4,570-mile district. Personnel-sharing, depending on where needs are the greatest, helps keep costs low. Like all DOTs in snow areas, costs vary by severity of the winter. Currently, the district budgets nearly $45 million per season for snow and ice control. A single 24-inch blizzard once cost the district $17 million, though.
