PEDESTRIAN - VEHICLE INTERACTIONS ON ROADS IN FRANCE
The French regulation concerning pedestrian road crossing is ambiguous. It stipulates that: (1) pedestrians must cross the road only after they make sure there is no immediate danger, taking into account the visibility, the distance and speed of vehicles. (2) they must use pedestrian crossings any time such crossings are located at less than 50 meters, (3) at crossroads, when there is no pedestrian crossing, pedestrians should cross the road in the continuation of the pavement; (4) drivers must let pedestrians cross a road when pedestrians are considered to have started crossing. Drivers must behave themselves in that respect; (5) even under speed limits, drivers must keep the situation and speed under control. Speed should take into account the quality of the road, the difficulties of the traffic and foreseeable obstacles.
