TRAFFIC SAFETY OF YOUNG PEOPLE INTERNATIONALLY
In the various problem areas of traffic safety, "young people", i.e., adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 years play a particular role: - Young people are particularly affected by traffic accidents. From some ages, traffic accidents are by far the biggest cause of death. - Young people are a risk to other road users on account of their extraordinary tendency to cause accidents. - The high willingness to take risks, overestimation of own ability, the idea of "freedom and adventure", desire to impress, and a lack of experience form an often "fatal" set of conditions. This paper includes a detailed comparison of Western and Eastern Germany, nine selected Western European countries and the United States. The OECD-IRTAD International Road Traffic and Accident Database is the main database used.
