CYCLE PARKING EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION STANDARDS

This paper describes a proposed standard for cycle parking equipment and installation in the UK, based on the Sheffield cycle parking stand or rack. The standard's purpose is to specify: (1) the principal design requirements; (2) the equipment to be used; and (3) how to install this equipment. The proposed standard is general purpose and universally applicable to any site where bicycles need to be parked. The London Cycling Campaign will seek endorsement of the standard by national cycling organisations, local authorities, amenity groups, and interest groups in the London area. Cycle stands need to be provided in a wide variety of visible and accessible locations where they will be well used and: (1) provide reasonable security against theft; (2) support cycles without damaging them; (3) not endanger pedestrians and other traffic; and (4) are visibly acceptable. The Sheffield stand, which is recommended, is described and has several advantages; each stand can accommodate two cycles, one on each side. The installation standard defines the criteria for selecting sites, the required dimensions for installation, requirements for securing racks to the ground, signing, and maintenance requirements. The London Cycling Forum has recommended scales of provision based on gross floor area.
