The main purpose of this Technical Note is to derive analytical relations for simple cases that show the effects of porosity and conductivity on RQD (rock quality designation) for smooth features. Based on these relations, charts are presented for practising engineers as a helpful tool in assessing the RQD, both from the geotechnical and groundwater engineering points of view. This Technical Note shows the relation between the in situ measured RQD value and the basic physical properties such as the porosity, aperture and conductivity.
