REMEDIAL STRENGTHENING WORKS TO CHAPPEL DRIVE BRIDGE, DONCASTER

The works described, combining sprayed concrete repair and plate bonding to the beam soffit over the central span, resulted from an assessment of condition and load bearing capacity. The 35 year old bridge is a three span concrete structure using nine pretensioned beams and an in situ concrete overslab. A Bailey bridge, supported by intermediate piers and abutments, was installed above the existing structure during the repair. Strengthening works included deck resurfacing and waterproofing, and the replacement of expansion joints. Details are given of the repairs to the cantilever design side spans using steel brackets. The plate bonding and concrete spraying operations were carried out from a barge moored in the canal below the bridge. The choice of the size of the spray equipment was important to ensure the satisfactory placement of concrete between the closely spaced reinforcement. The sequence of undertaking the work, during which some original design faults were found, is described.
