THE RECONSTRUCTION OF GLANRHYD BRIDGE
Glanrhyd Bridge carries a single-track railway over the River Tywi in south-west Wales. Following its collapse in 1987, during severe flooding, it was reconstructed using a 65 m span lightweight steel truss superstructure, assembled on site from prefabricated components. Taking advantage of the light railway status of the line, economies were achieved by designing the new bridge for a non-standard live loading and by adopting direct fastening of the track rather than ballasted construction.
