HANDYBAT - A NEW DOOR-TO-DOOR TRAFFIC SYSTEM FOR THE COUNTY OF BORNHOLM, DENMARK
The transport system for handicapped people introduced in 1991 by Bornholms Amts Trafikselskab (BAT) in Denmark led to such a demand that in January 1995 an expanded service was introduced. Details are given of HandyBAT, a door-to-door minibus system open to everyone and designed to ensure efficiency gains and energy savings through the coordination of transport services. The use of new technology to administer the scheme is outlined. The way in which HandyBAT operates and the different groups using the service are discussed. Examples are given of journeys undertaken. A one year trial is currently being carried out and some early results are reported. For the covering abstract see IRRD 878000.
