TRANSPORT INTERCHANGES AND ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL
The author considers the barriers faced by disabled people wishing to travel and identifies a) physical barriers, b) understanding barriers, c) situation barriers and d) psychological barriers. Some of the findings of a study being carried out by COLITRAH (the Liaison Committee for the Transport of Disabled People) are outlined. Design elements of the transport system were found to be particularly crucial in decision making. Recommendations are made for improving signs. The problems of transferring between modes are discussed. The author emphasises that it is rare for only one mode of transport to be used. For the covering abstract see IRRD 878000.
