AESTHETICS IN BRIDGE DESIGN
This paper considers the aesthetic aspects of bridge design beginning with what should be considered at each design stage. Five aspects are discussed in more detail: a) form, b) character, c) detail, d) scale and e) proportion. Another factor also noted is environmental intrusion. Contractual aspects of aesthetics are examined, in particular how design excellence can be encouraged when Design and Build or Design/Build/Finance/Operate schemes are chosen. Publications currently being compiled on the subject of road and bridge aesthetics are described. For the covering abstract see IRRD 877985.
