TRAFFIC CALMING AS PART OF A STRATEGY TO REDUCE THE DOMINANCE OF THE CAR

This chapter considers some of the more technical aspects of traffic calming measures with reference to their effectiveness and outlines a few of the important issues which should be tackled but normally are not. Techniques considered include a) road humps, b) speed cushions, c) pinch points, d) rumble strips and roundabouts and e) woonerven. Parking, the level of through traffic and traffic calming in rural areas are also discussed. The second part of the chapter covers new transport policy developments in other European countries in which traffic calming plays a complementary role and other more important aspects have taken over. A number of car-free cities, town centres and tourist areas are described. For the covering abstract see IRRD 877091.
