RESEARCH INTO FLY ASH FILLER WITH HYDROXIDE FOR APPLICATION IN POROUS ASPHALT

ONDERZOEK NAAR VLIEGASHOUDENDE MIDDELSOORT VULSTOF MET HYDROXIDE VOOR TOEPASSING IN ZOAB

To investigate the practicability of fly ash filler with hydroxide in porous asphalt, this type of filler was compared to two limestone fillers with hydroxide. Porous asphalt specimens with these three types of filler were tested using the static direct tensile test and the wheel tracking test. Mastics (filler and bitumen) were investigated using the following tests: (a) softening point Ring and Ball; (b) stamp test; and (c) force ductility test. The fillers were thoroughly investigated using standard as well as special test methods. The test results show that at lower temperatures (static direct tensile test) porous asphalt with fly ash filler with hydroxide has a higher susceptibility to water compared to the limestone fillers with hydroxide. This effect was not found at higher temperatures (wheel tracking test). In order to reduce the water susceptibility of porous asphalt with fly ash filler at lower temperatures, it is recommended to correct for the lower specific gravity of this filler.
