LANDSLIDES: INVESTIGATION AND MITIGATION. CHAPTER 7 - ORGANIZATION OF INVESTIGATION PROCESS

This chapter addresses the field investigation of landslides. Geologists and geotechnical engineers must utilize a structured investigation process to deduce the properties of naturally occurring materials and their geometrical relationships. Successful investigations require the investigator to have sound judgment and the ability to make decisions. This chapter presents the basic guidelines that have evolved over many years of experience in landslide field investigation, provides a definition of the investigation process, discusses the elements of an investigation, and gives key factors for high-quality investigations at landslide sites. A checklist for planning a landslide investigation is included.
