Recently, there has been a remarkable trend toward heavy and multipurpose lifters as deck cranes for use as on-deck cargo-handling gear because of a variety of cargos and the changeability of the ship's service route. To meet these requirements, IHI has developed the first fully hydraulic double deck crane (2x15 tons=30 tone type) in Japan and has simultaneously and successfully completed a series of the same type cranes with hoisting capacity ranging from 20 to 60 tons. These cranes are designed on the basis of the technology of IHI hydraulic single deck cranes and electric double deck cranes; all operations of these cranes, including the synchronous control system between both single cranes, are conducted by means of a hydraulic system. Compared with the conventional electric double deck cranes, the IHI fully hydraulic double deck crane has many superior cargo-handling characteristics besides easy operation and maintenance. This paper provides an outline and describes the general features of the IHI fully hydraulic double deck crane.
