POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS FOR BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS IN AREAS UNDERLAIN BY A COMPLEX MARBLE FORMATION IN HONG KONG
Complex and varied geological conditions were encountered during the site investigation for a number of bridge foundations along the proposed route of a trunk road between two new towns in the North West New Territories of Hong Kong. Special care is needed in the construction of the deep foundations for these bridges, particularly in areas underlain by a marble formation which has a varied karstic surface underneath a thick superficial cover and locally contains solution features, including large cavities. Foundation conditions are further complicated by varying lithology, weathering, dyke intrusions and the related alterations and thrust faulting. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 877168.
