A DYNAMIC FREEWAY INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR MELBOURNE

The purpose of the paper is to describe the Dynamic Freeway Information System being implemented by VicRoads on Melbourne's South Eastern Freeway and to provide details of various system components. A method of estimating travel time using data from existing incident detection stations is described and an indication of the accuracy of the method is provided. The paper includes a summary of investigations into driver responses to alternate sign formats and describes the methods selected by VicRoads to provide drivers with both travel time and congestion information. Details of a new sign format, described as a 'trip information sign' and the use of telephones to enable drivers to obtain traffic information will be of particular interest. The system configuration adopted by VicRoads is detailed in the paper, together with a prediction that driver information systems of the type described will extend to the arterial road network and not be limited to freeways.
