TRITRAM: LINKING A PROCESS BASED TRAFFIC SIMULATION TO AN ADAPTIVE TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

The TRITRAM (Traveller Information and Traffic Management) project uses high performance traffic and road network simulation to investigate the next generation of traffic management systems. The simulation software incorporates mesoscopic and microscopic models of traffic flow. It is implemented using object-oriented, process-based discrete event simulation methods in C++. TRITRAM runs on powerful workstation processors, permitting simulation of complex networks, and has an interface enabling connection to an external adaptive traffic controller (SCATS). During simulation, stop-line detectors are triggered by the simulated vehicles and thereby provide traffic flow data. This data can be transmitted to a SCATS regional controller, which in turn coordinates the simulated traffic lights. The paper describes experience gained during software development.
