Increased promotion of intelligent transport system solutions world-wide to transportation problems has raised the awareness of transport planners, managers and engineers to the options available to them. This has been coupled with major advances recently in technologies available to companies supplying products to the industry. These influences have impacted upon developments in traffic control systems. No longer can they be seen as simple signal control systems alone. Integrated systems are required that address transport problems in a cohesive way providing users with a wide range of control and management facilities. SCATS is such a system providing a 'global' solution to transport problems in the widest sense. SCATS systems offering many of the ITS initiatives have been installed in locations throughout the world. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, see IRRD abstract 868345.
