EFFECT OF OPTICAL GUIDANCE LIGHTS AT KAWAUCHI TUNNEL

For speeding vehicles to travel safely, the road configuration must be easy to see, drivers exceeding the design speed must be made aware of the danger, and speeds must be kept in check. To determine the optimal flashing pattern when using the guidance lights installed at Kawauchi Tunnel for these purposes, an analysis was conducted of tunnel approach speeds and speed changes for eight flashing patterns. Vehicles passing through the tunnel were found to vary their speed. In a questionnaire survey, 57 percent of the drivers reported that the side walls of the tunnel were made easier to see.
