A METHOD FOR PREVENTION OF ENCROACHMENT ON OPPOSITE LANE AT A SHARP CURVE

In Japan, with its many mountain areas, an arterial highway can include steep slopes and sharp curves, except for expressways. Consequently, vehicles are frequently driven at excessive speeds or they may encroach on or overlap onto opposite lanes. In particular, crossing onto the other lane on a curve, due to excessive speed, may cause a traffic accident. Drivers are normally warned by curve mirrors and reflection-type delineators, but their effects are not always satisfactory at some places based on road conditions. In these circumstances, the authors have developed and practically applied a message sign system of opposite approaching vehicles that warns drivers about excess speeds and the presence of vehicles in the opposite lane. This report describes survey results of this system on speeds and lane-crossing status of vehicles at curves. The system consists of a speed and presence vehicle detector, which can detect simultaneously the presence and speed of a vehicle in front of a curve, and a warning message signboard, which warns drivers that their speeds are excessive or there are vehicles coming in the opposite lane. The paper also discusses how to appropriately install vehicle detectors and signboards, for the best timing and place on behalf of drivers entering a curve at excessive speeds in the presence of opposite vehicles. The relationship between excessive speeds and ratios of lane-crossing is also described, according to surveys conducted before and after the installation of signboards. The results suggest that the system brought about a considerable change, preventing excess speeds and encroachment on the opposite lane of vehicles, making the most of signboards.
