COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY

Delco Electronics is developing advanced collision warning systems that optimize driver safety and consumer value using system engineering methodologies. These techniques ensure the development of collision warning systems that are in harmony with the road, the vehicle, and the driver. The new approach is to integrate emerging millimeter wave and microwave object detection sensors and technology with systems already existing in vehicles. Integration is accomplished while also giving careful consideration to the human factor aspects of the driver warnings. Two vehicles containing DE FOREWARN--systems that use front and rear radar sensors together with vehicle data to make split-second intelligent assessments of collision threats--are described. The forward locking sensors include 77 GHz electronically and mechanically scanned radars. The rear sensor is a 24 GHz multi-zone staring radar. These sensors are integrated to a microprocessor that also collects vehicle data including: steering angle brake position, vehicle speed, audio system status, wiper status, tire pressure, and PRNDL status. Using this data, algorithms in the microprocessor identifies targets, calculates paths, assesses threats, and initiates operator warnings based on the current condition. The system distinguishes between tailgating and impending collision, with different sets of warnings for each. Impending collision warnings are generated in two stages depending on the severity of the threat. Warnings may be audio, visual, and/or tactile. The timing of each warning is based on the range and velocity of both vehicles as well as human factor considerations of normal driving and braking behavior.
