THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REAR-END COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM EQUIPPED WITH A LASER RADAR FOR HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKS

Many rear-end collisions on highways, which used to result in serious accidents, are caused by driver carelessness or looking away. To prevent these accidents, drivers must always take care as a following vehicle approaches, but the careless drivers cannot be taken care of so easily. A warning system that signals a dangerous approach of the following vehicle is expected to improve driver safety. Some practical rear-end monitoring systems use a supersonic wave or a watching camera, but these are not useful to warn of the danger of rear-end collision because of the short detecting distance. A rear-end collision warning system has been developed, equipped with laser radar that can detect enough distance to warn. The laser radar head is mounted to the rear-end of the vehicle and detects the distance and the velocity of the following vehicle. By the warning algorithm based on the distance and relative velocity, the system can give proper alarm to the driver and the following vehicle. The effect of the system was confirmed by vehicle tests. The circumstances of the system are reported and the newly developed system that miniaturized and improved the ability is described.
