FIELD EXPERIMENT RELATED TO INFORMATICS IN RURAL MOTORIZED COMMUNITIES

This paper outlines a field experiment related to informatics in motorized communities in Kochi Prefecture conducted in October 1995. The information system concerning motorized society has been confined to the problems of urban areas. On the other hand, problems due to depopulation, aging, and underdevelopment of public transportation are serious for those residing in rural areas. Utilization of information technology has become an important theme for the solution of these problems. This field experiment was conducted to promote regional informatics in rural areas. With the expansion of the area where people move in everyday life, the amount of information is increasing. The storage capacity of car-mounted units is also increasing, so the units can handle increasing information load. Because the communication capacity of a radio type medium is limited, depending on the type of information being handled, information interchange at fixed points is indispensable. Road facilities called information plazas are being implemented by the Ministry of Construction and local governments to exist as such fixed points. The application system using the regional information database, which provides many kinds of information in addition to the road traffic information, is presented. By experimenting with the lifestyles of businessmen, aged persons, tourists, and housewives, the reactions of participants in the experiment will be checked. The need for a comprehensive system covering tasks related to technologies and social systems through presentation of the lifestyle of the people living in the region in the future is evident.
