INTEGRATING TRAVELER INFORMATION SERVICES WITHIN ARENA

ARENA is a platform for the development, implementation, and field trials of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) based on collaboration between the authorities, industry, and other organizations and institutes. ARENA has the west coast of Sweden as a test area with Gothenburg as the main city. At ARENA, a number of projects have been successfully carried out in the Advanced Transport Telematics program. Two of the projects are TANGO and PROMISE. TANGO has implemented and tested dynamic route guidance. A traffic information center has been developed that links in-vehicle navigation systems with real-time traffic information via two-way communication to provide services, such as route guidance. PROMISE has developed, tested, and implemented a field trial of personal traveler information, which is received via a handheld computer. Services offered have included public transport timetables, parking information, and weather information. It is now intended to try and integrate these services into one system, which could be provided by the new generation of personal intelligent communicators. This paper will discuss the progress made in integrating the diverse applications and will focus on the following: 1) ARENA as a platform for the chosen system architecture, 2) communication requirements and solutions, 3) user terminals--what is available? and 4) integration in vehicles.
