THE HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ROMANSE PROJECT OVERALL FINDINGS AND RESULTS

The ROMANSE project in Southampton, United Kingdom, is one of the principal projects within the European Union DRIVE program to demonstrate the use of telematics in the control, management, and information systems for urban traffic. The trials have been completed and this paper presents the results of the trials. Successful applications are reviewed for the areas of strategic information systems (i.e., digital maps, real-time traffic, route planning), public transport (i.e., vehicle location systems, ON-street TRIPlanner terminals), urban traffic management (i.e., automatic incident detection, closed circuit television image processing, variable message signs), and traffic and travel information (i.e., radio, public display units, fax service). The paper concentrates on the systems that have been installed and the results of the monitoring and evaluation program.
