YOKOHAMA NATIONAL HIGHWAY INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Yokohama National Highway Office is responsible for the administration of 240 km of national highways on six routes in Kanagawa Prefecture. With the aim of ensuring safe and smooth operation of traffic on these roads, the National Highway Office has been engaged in the development of a system for collection and analysis of data on the road, traffic, and meteorological conditions; speedy and appropriate processing of these data; and provision of comprehensive road information to road users. The Kensetsu-Communication System for Mobile Station (K-COSMOS) was developed with functions, in addition to that of telephones, for phototelegraphy, facsimile transmission, and access to road traffic information systems. The present paper describes a traffic control information management system in which K-COSMOS has been utilized to allow speedy provision of traffic control information to road users by means of display boards. A report is also presented on the investigations that are under way at bodies, including the Chubu and Hokuriku Regional Construction Bureaus for the construction of new comprehensive road information network systems utilizing K-COSMOS.
