Penn Station in New York City is the nation's busiest passenger train station, accommodating Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) passengers. The LIRR terminal facilities, however, are under considerable strain and a renovation plan to extend Platform 11 to accommodate 12-car trains was recently initiated. The work involved extending the platform 85 m (280 ft), realigning track, and removing 11 columns. The work was divided into two phases. Phase 1, which is discussed in this article, included the removal of five columns directly beneath the JAF Post Office. Existing conditions are described.
