TROUBLED BRIDGES OVER WATER: MAINTAINING THE NATION'S INVENTORY

The nation's ailing bridges are the subject of this article that reports that unsafe bridges can be found in every state and that a quarter of the nation's interstate bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. The highest percentage of deficient bridges, according to the Federal Highway Administration, can be found in the northeast, where age, corrosive deicing salts, and higher traffic volumes are taking their toll. Money for maintenance and/or bridge replacement continues to dwindle as the inventory of deficient bridges rises. Technology, though, is providing tools to aid in bridge inspection and maintenance. Examples of bridge decay, inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement are provided.
