PLUMBING THE QUALITY OF A SEWER SYSTEM

Phoenix, Arizona, adds polyvinyl chloride linings to concrete sewer walls to prevent corrosion and pipeline degradation. Sewer pipe installed prior to the mid-1960s, though, was unprotected, and the city decided to initiate a massive rehabilitation effort to locate, repair, and/or replace unlined concrete pipes. This article describes the condition assessment performed on the sewer system, the design phase following assessment, and the rehabilitation alternatives. Of 14 separate projects, two have been completed. The remaining projects should be completed by mid-1996. A sidebar examines the mathematical formula for pipe friction against sewer flow and the shifting coefficient n.
