Scotland's Kingston Bridge in Glasgow is the world's most instrumented bridge and Europe's busiest bridge. The 143.2 m main span carries five lanes of traffic in each direction for a total of 154,000 vehicles per day, and that figure is growing at a rate of 4.5 percent a year. The extensive bridge monitoring system is in place to prevent collapse during a long-term strengthening and repair program. This article describes the survey and electronic instruments that monitor the bridge and its geotechnical conditions. The data collected is processed and reviewed by independent teams. Bridge refurbishing and strengthening is ongoing and the various phases are described.
