DESIGNING EFFICIENT SHORT SPAN STEEL BRIDGES

To address the needs of bridge owners and designers, the Transportation Structures Committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute initiated a project to develop design aids for short span bridges. The project's results were compiled in two forms. First, a comprehensive set of plans for pre-designed bridge superstructures was developed, covering a variety of roadway widths and beam/girder (stringer) types and spacings. Second, computer software was developed to generate customized designs and supporting calculations. The software can produce design calculations for most of the pre-designed superstructures shown in the Plans except end-bolted cover plated beams and partially-stiffened web plate girders which require additional design work not yet incorporated into the Software. For a specific project, this package (Plans and Software) can be used for generating both the preliminary design alternatives and the final design.
