It sounds simple enough: a person in New York City, Sydney, Australia or Washington, DC can use a stored-value smartcard to pay for different transportation services in that market. Yet, many obstacles face transit operators seeking to harness the potential of smartcards as an integrated payment medium for different modes and services. This article considers the key issues and forecasts that growth in the use of smartcards for fare collection will be driven from outside the industry.
