ADVANCED PAYMENT STATIONS: NEW OPTIONS FOR PARKING PATRONS AND OPERATORS

Consumers are increasingly using payment options such as credit and debit cards and checks rather than cash for transactions. In response to customer demand, businesses that have not accepted credit cards in the past are now welcoming plastic. As a convenience for consumers and to provide greater efficicency in operations, managers of parking facilities are turning to credit cards as a payment alternative. While Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and American Express cards predominate, parking companies are also developing private label credit cards similar to those traditionally offered by retailers and other service providers. The article looks at the system Chicago-based General Parking Corporation has created by combining Swiss technology with U.S. automation, with the aim of reducing waiting time and controlling costs.
