THIS IS NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY, BUT... NEW SENSOR-LADEN SIDE-IMPACT DUMMY TAKES A BIG HIT

This article describes the introduction of the Side Impact Dummy-second generation-small (SID-IIs) dummy for the testing of side air bags. Developed by the Occupant Safety Research Partnership (OSRP), a collaborative venture of Ford, GM, Chrysler Corp. and First Technology Safety Systems Inc. of Plymouth, Michigan, and part of the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), SID-IIs is 5 ft (1.5 m) in height and weighs 96 lb (43.6 kg). She is about the size of a small woman or an average 12- or 13-year-old child. With 111 sensors, SID-IIs will yield more detailed measurements of injuries suffered in side-impact collisions.
