CORROSION PROTECTION METHODS IN THE STEEL, WATER AND GAS PIPE INDUSTRY

Pipelines are rather unique structures in that they are exposed both inside and outside to corrosive influences and these two influences are often greatly dissimilar. This paper briefly reviews the use of coatings and cathodic protection in preventing corrosion of pipelines. It details the types of coatings used, both internally and externally for the various types of pipes associated with the water and gas industry. Coatings specifically covered in this paper include cement mortar, coal tar enamel, epoxy, polyethylene, metal spray, zinc silicate and conventional paints. The economic aspects of protective coatings are also covered and some comparative figures for costs of the various types of coatings are given.
